PD Dr. Martina Anna Maggioni, joined the Aerospace Medicine and Extreme Environments Research Group on October 2012 as a guest researcher coming from the Università degli Studi di Milano (Milan, Italy), where she is Assistant Professor of Physiology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences for Health. She is now Senior Research Associate at the Center for Space Medicine and Extreme Environment Berlin.

She is currently Co-PI and study coordinator of Project 4: Climate change, heat stress and their impact on health and work capacity within the  DFG Research Unit (DFG: German Research Foundation), Climate change and health in Sub-Saharan Africa, DFG-FOR 2936 (2020-2022).

She is Principal Investigator and study coordinator of ESA/DLR sponsored study CardiCorTEx. This study will investigate  circadian rhythm alterations during winter over at Concordia Station (3233 m a.s.l.) in Antarctica, the most remote place on our planet.

Research Fields

  • Cardiovascular autonomic control and brain function. Brain-Heart axis. Study of different analogs for spaceflight, like bed rest, head out water immersion, isolation & confinement (Studies in Antarctica).
  • Heart rate variability as a method to asses stress and resilience, bridging the gap between psychological and physiological functions, towards an integrative neurovisceral approach to investigate the autonomic nervous system.
  • Chronobiology: circadian rhythm assessment in extreme environments, cardiovascular autonomic control and its interplay with core body temperature.
  • Cardiovascular autonomic control and physical performance, especially in extreme environments.
  •  Exercise physiology.
